The Birth of Learning Without Boundaries
Learning Without Boundaries (LWOB) was born in the heart of the
pandemic, 2020, during a time when the world felt disconnected and
uncertain. School closures, combined with the general upheaval
caused by the pandemic, left many students around the world without
the structure and support they needed to thrive academically. I
founded LWOB in response to the particular challenges faced by
students in Hong Kong.
The Impact of School Closures
Having parents who immigrated from Venezuela and Hong Kong, I grew
up hearing stories about the challenges they faced when leaving
their home countries. During the pandemic, as I watched the news to
stay connected around the world, I became increasingly aware of the
effects the pandemic was having on Hong Kong's educational system.
Schools were shuttered, cutting students off from their routines,
educational support, and social connections. Many students lacked
the resources and money to continue learning remotely, and the
weight of this uncertainty became a heavy burden.
Addressing the Language Barrier
During this time, I noticed that many Hong Kong families were
migrating to the United Kingdom, hoping to start anew. However,
these families were confronted with a significant challenge: the
language barrier. The English skills of many students were not
strong enough to comfortably integrate into their new environments.
Knowing how critical language is in providing access to
opportunities, I wanted to create a space where these students could
practice and develop their English proficiency, specifically by
conversing with native speakers. My goal was to empower them with
the confidence they needed to communicate effectively, both in their
new schools and in everyday life.
Finding Inspiration
My inspiration came from an unexpected source: a YouTube interview
with a principal from Hong Kong who had managed to save a demolished
high school through passion and determination. His story of
resilience and his dedication to students deeply resonated with me.
His belief in the transformative power of education aligned
perfectly with my vision for LWOB, and I knew I wanted to build
something that could make a lasting difference for students.
A Growing Community
With encouragement from that principal’s story, I threw myself into
developing Learning Without Boundaries. What began as a simple idea,
a platform for students to practice English with volunteers, rapidly
grew into something much larger. As word spread and more volunteers
joined our cause, LWOB transformed into a community dedicated to
personalized education. We started partnering with schools in Hong
Kong, and we quickly expanded all around Hong Kong. By designing our
lessons to suit each student's unique learning style, we created an
environment where students not only learned English but thrived in
ways that went beyond the classroom. Over time, we have been able to
impact hundreds of students across the globe, empowering them to
overcome language barriers and take on new challenges in their
education and lives.
